A couple of months ago Ben was asked to be the Scoutmaster in our ward. I didn't love the calling. Mostly the weekends/week away at camps, lots of meetings and stuff. Anyway, I prayed that he'd be released (don't judge me). Well, he's going to be released from that calling because he was just called to be the 2nd counselor in our ward's Bishopric. I think I should be more specific when I pray. :)
We're a little nervous but I'm actually feeling pretty good about it all, which is kind of surprising to me. The other men he'll be serving with and their wives are really great. The hardest thing will probably be sitting in the church meeting with the boys by myself since Ben will be up on the stand. But as soon as Ben went up to the stand after being called today, a really sweet teenage girl moved over to sit by me and the boys and she was a huge help. After the meeting she very nicely asked if she could sit by us every week. What a sweetheart (and a lifesaver!). So I think it'll be good.
As far as I'm concerned, I used to teach a Primary class but now I'm the choir director. I've never done that before and it's kind of fun actually (another surprise)! It's a recent thing so today is only our second practice but last week we had a good time. I'm having practices at my house with goodies afterward so we just sing for a bit and then eat and chat for awhile. The plan is to sing in church once a month. If anyone knows of some good songs I could have our choir sing (or good alternate arrangements of hymns), let me know!

I have never actually met you but my husband and I served with Ben on his mission. Neither Josiah or I are surprised Ben is in the bishopric. He will do a great job!! You will survive also. We realized a few weeks ago that all but 1 year of our son's life, Josiah has served in one bishopric or another. Sacrament meeting is hard but doable. There are some perks. It is much easier to get bishopric support for your calling! To Ben - have a great time in High Priests when you are released! :)
How fun for you guys! Ben is just so awesome that it is not surprising he would be called to a calling that needs someone just so great like him and even more importantly such a great awesome wife to be able to adjust and handle it all. Good luck! I guess being on the high counsel was a good prep for him. So when you are sitting with the two boys by yourself, picture me trying to do it and I am sure you will get a good laugh out of it all!
Amy! Wild! I'm not surprised though, they are always grabbing Ben for those kind of callings. You caught yourself a good one! Have you heard of the Hymnplicity books? That is my recommendation for easy choir performances. I need to call you! Expect a call this week!
So funny that you should post this, because I was talking with my friend on Saturday (her husband is also a counselor in a bishopric) and she said that in many ways the bishopric is less time intensive than say scouts or YM. Sundays are long and hard, but you don't have all the weekly stuff and activities. Ben will be awesome.
Hooray for help from that YW in your ward, awesome!
Weren't we talking about that when I was there?! That is crazy! But like everyone else said, I'm sure Ben will do an awesome job!
And since he's not in Scouts anymore, that means no Scout Camp next year. Hmmm.....we'll have to figure a time to get you out to DC for a visit!
Well, well, Amy we are cohorts. Matt was called to be 2nd counselor in our ward about a month ago. We were a bit surprised. I laughed at church when everyone came up and said: "I don't know whether to congratulate you or give you my condolences." So if you ever need to talk to someone in the same boat, give me a call. It hasn't been bad so far, guess I'm waiting for baby #2 to arrive and then we'll see.
Wow!! You guys are gonna be busy! But, as others have said...Ben will be great and you will probably see him more now than you did while he was in charge of Scouts. Tell him we said congrats!!! I'm sure he will do an amazing job and will do wonderful things for your ward!
